Tampa Bay, Florida will host it’s fifth Super Bowl in 2021 when it hosts Super Bowl LV at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The event was supposed to be held in Los Angeles, California in 2021 at the new home stadium of the Los Angeles Chargers and Rams. However, Los Angeles experienced record amounts of rainfall during the winter of 2016, thus, delaying construction.

NFL owners voted unanimously this past week to relocate the game to Tampa Bay, Florida. Los Angeles will host the Super Bowl in 2022 instead. The stadium in Los Angeles will open during the 2020 NFL season, however, the National Football League has a rule that disallows stadium’s from hosting the Super Bowl during their inaugural season. Roger Goodell was very vocal about the importance of making sure all scheduling pertaining to the Super Bowl goes smoothly since it’s such a complex event to host. Delaying the Super Bowl in Los Angeles for another year, therefore, made more sense.

Raymond James Stadium is currently in the middle of a renovation phase that will include new locker rooms, suites, concessions, video boards and sound systems. The project is estimated to cost $150 million or more to complete. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization and the venue will have to meet the league’s requirements for hosting a Super Bowl. It will be the third Super Bowl held at Raymond James Stadium.

Tampa Bay, Florida as a city has previously hosted Super Bowls in 1984, 1991, 2001 and 2009. The Oakland Raiders who are relocating to Las Vegas in two seasons, are expected to put in a bid to host the Super Bowl in either 2023 or 2034. The 2018 Super Bowl will be held at US Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings. The 2019 Super Bowl will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, home of the Atlanta Falcons. The 2020 Super Bowl will be held at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.
