In memory of the 50th anniversary of America's Vietnam War, the Boston Red Sox honored more than 1,300 Vietnam Veterans and their families at Fenway Park yesterday. A small on field ceremony was held before the team’s matinee matchup with the New York Yankees; a game the concluded after 16 innings of play. The ceremony included a flyover of four F-15 Jets from a local Air National Guard Base.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and U.S. Army Major General Paul LaCamera also joined the Veterans on the field before the game. A smaller Vietnam War Memorial replica is also currently on display at Fenway Park. The original memorial can be visited in Washington, D.C., not far from the Washington Monument. To us, this was an especially touching effort by the Boston Red Sox. So many Vietnam Veterans returned to the United States with many problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder and drug and alcohol addictions; conditions that some veterans still struggle with today.
