After a young girl was struck by a 105 MPH foul ball during a New York Yankees home game at Yankee Stadium, the Seattle Mariners are taking measures to add protective netting to Safeco Field. The measures of the netting are unknown but will likely extend down to the end of both dugouts and will be completed by the beginning of the 2018 Major League Baseball season.
Major League Baseball went public with it’s recommendations for netting and fan safety back in 2015. The New York Mets were one of the first Major League teams to implement additional protective netting for their fans. Other teams that have also announced they will be adding more protective netting include the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers. By 2019, fans should expect for all 30 teams to adopt this trend of adding additional protective netting.
